NOTE: It’s important to note that not every video will work for your needs, and that you should always talk to your doctor or a certified health professional before embarking on an exercise routine.
We all know that exercise is something we should do. But for many people, the idea of getting in better shape looks like a lot more work than they’re comfortable with. With all the gyms, machines and programs available for consumers these days, it can be hard to know where to start. Getting good exercise doesn’t mean paying for an expensive gym membership. It also might not even require buying a bulky machine. Here are some fantastic tools you can use to start exercising on your schedule and to meet your needs.
YouTube
If you’re someone who likes using instructional videos to help you exercise, YouTube can be a great resource. Millions of videos get uploaded each day, and many have exercise routines and programs that are just as good as what you’d find in paid content.
Some of our favorite channels include HASFit, Blogilates and Leslie Sansone’s Walk at Home.
If you don’t have the time or money to pay for classes with a personal trainer, watching these videos can give you a great head start. In addition, if you own a smart TV or streaming device, you can cast the videos from your phone, computer, or tablet to your television for easier viewing.
Resistance bands
The nice thing about a good set of resistance bands is their portability and versatility. They can be used in almost any room in your house and for a wide variety of exercise. Combined with some YouTube videos, you can do any number of strength and stretching exercises. Since they also provide low impact resistance and flexibility, you don’t have to worry about heavy dumbbells or equipment cluttering up your space.
Yoga mat
Long story short: doing yoga on carpet is ill-advised (no one wants rug burn, after all). Buying an affordable yoga mat can help you with your stability. Additionally, you can use it as a base for any workout you do with your resistance bands.
Wearable fitness watch/band
Some wearable fitness trackers are better than others, but using one can help you hit your target heart rate and distance traveled. Pick a lightweight one that syncs with your phone and your meal tracker of choice so you can keep better track of your health.
Walking/running shoes and your neighborhood
We’d be cutting ourselves’ short if we didn’t mention the joy of walking in your own neighborhood. Walking is a great way to exercise and enjoy your surroundings. Grab a friend and go for a walk or a jog. It’ll make for great conversation and a healthy heart. Just be careful to stretch beforehand, go at a safe pace and try to pick surfaces that won’t be too hard on your joints.
Basic habits are the building blocks for positive change.
However you decide to start exercising, the most important thing is to do something you enjoy and take it at your own pace. Creating positive habits now, however small, can add up to lasting change for your health.
